The Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu has requested approval from the State House of Assembly to restructure the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC).
Signed by the Secretary to the Cross River State Government, Prof. A. Owan Enoh, the request pointed out the Commission’s ineffectiveness and requested that the Legislative body invoke the powers of the constitution of Nigeria and duly remove the CROSIEC Chairman and all its members owing to gross ineffectiveness.”
As contained in the request, the Cross River Government “observed with dismay a cavalier work attitude by the Chairman and members of the State Electoral Commission. This inertia has led to the State being unable to conduct Local Government Council elections, which should have been held in 2023”.
Governor Otu requested the state legislature to empower him to reorganize the state electoral body to properly have elections across the 18 local government areas of the state.
Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Alvert Eyambem asked the House Committee on Judiciary Public Service Matters, Public Petition, and Conflict Resolution to apply in-depth study and make recommendations on the matter
